Building a European popular solidarity network with Palestinian women prisoners in Israel and Syria

Difficulty in applying the twinning (Parrainage) model for female prisoners

In Brussels, Belgium, the “Maison de la famille – Willie Beers” organized a public party on May 20 around a banquet and a musical performance to evoke the fate of Palestinian women prisoners.

The idea of building this network of solidarity with these women was born after the Conference of solidarity with Palestinian women detained in Israeli and Syrian prisons, which was held on March 5 in Brussels-Belgium, organized by: “La Maison Family – Willie Beers” and “Secular Palestine Association”.

During this soirée, we presented the difficulties encountered in the process of building this network based on the familiar sponsorship(parrainage) in Europe, due to the specificity of the situation of Palestinian women detained in Israeli and Syrian prisons.

As a former woman prisoner “Najwan Odeh” explained during the meeting with Nour Badr, Naji El Khatib, Nihad Wahdan and Manar Shobaki, the prisoners are cut off from the world, no telephone, no mail, no internet, which makes it impossible to establish a direct personal relationship between the two parties, the godfather, and the godmother with the prisoner.

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons are in a completely different situation from the situation of prisoners in all countries of the world, due to the harsh conditions of isolation and the impossibility of establishing contact with the outside world.

As for the Palestinian prisoners in the Syrian prisons, the situation is also tragic, because there is no means of communication between the prisoners and the outside world.

The difficulty of constructing this classic form of solidarity is what obliges us to think of other forms of expression of this solidarity.

Finally, the meeting allowed participants to express their solidarity by donating money to buy books and other needs of women prisoners.
